Gap Year Activities
"Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore." Andre Gide
There are literally thousands and thousands of things to occupy yourself with when it comes to Gap Year activities and some excellent websites that tell you all about them.
With this in mind I wanted to make this page more about what I wish I had known and prepared myself before I went on my trip so hopefully you can avoid the mistakes and misjudgments that I made.
Ouch! - £$R€Y
Doing fun things with children was what the trip was about but I simply had not appreciated how much it would cost for three of us.
- We went Zorbing at Rotarua. For the three of us it cost £100.
- We went to the water park in Australia - It cost £50 and the in park food was very expensive too.
- We went horse riding at Marahau - It cost £120
- Jet boating in Queenstown - £100
- Skiing in California - It cost around £120 a day excluding ski clothes
The fun activities was one area where I had hugely under-estimated in my budget. New Zealand was the worst with things like Jetboating in Queenstown and Horse riding in the Able Tasman coming in at over 6 times what was budgeted.
High on the list of ‘must do’s’ had been swimming with Dolphins. I had never dreamt that the experience would cost upwards of £70 each!
The frightening expense of this meant that some of things that we had flown thousands of miles to experience were actually beyond my budget so we missed out.
If you have a must do list for your gap year activities, find out how much they cost before you leave so you can budget for them rather than miss out.
