Child Proofing your hotel accommodation

"God never tells us in advance whether the course we are to follow is the correct one." - Albert Einstein

I feel very corny writing this as most parents are fully aware of these aspects of travel but maybe I was a bit slow, but when Sarah stuck her head and shoulders out the window of the Youth Hostel in Auckland and cooed. 'Wow!! Look how high up we are Mum!' I must confess I gained a couple more dozen grey hairs.
We were an easy twelve storeys up and there she was with her hips on the window sill, her toe tips balanced on the bed.

I am also aware that other parents planning trips will have different sorts of children to deal with (intrepid adventurers, cautious kids, climbers and burrowers etc) not to mention that fact that age is an issue too. What you have to do for a 2 year old child is very different from an 11 year old.

That said, the hotel room safety issue things that I found on our travels were:

  • Low balcony's high up. Our hotel in Malaysia (see image above - this was our view from our room of the pool) The balcony railing was wobbly and gave me the heebies.
  • In a couple of places the hot tap water was blisteringly hot.
  • We had a couple of places where the fire safety doors had such strong springs that they swung back with such force that Lisa's fingers were caught and badly cut.
  • On a couple of occasions the children managed either to lock themselves in or out of a hotel room and got themselves into a state.
