My Gap Year
This website isn't really about me and our adventures but to give you a little background as to how it all started when I was about 11 my mum and a friend bumped into each other in the supermarket back home. Initial hellos over my mum asked what she was up to.
Conspiratorially the woman leaned forward and said, 'It's my 40th next year and I am going to trek around the Himalayas. After, of course, I've had my hysterectomy.'
Aged eleven I didn't know what a hysterectomy was but thought it must be something wonderfully funny (hysterical) and given how my mum appeared deeply impressed I thought that I'd like to do something equally impressive and awesome for my 40th birthday. (Which seemed a complete age away). Funny how this woman would never know her ideas inspired my own adventures nearly thirty years later!
Well in a blink of an eye, forty was creeping up on me and I found myself a single mother of two kids, proud owner of a mortgage, a cat, two rabbits and a very tatty car indeed. But the choice was, do something amazing for my 40th birthday or regret it evermore.
I took the kids out of school and we travelled around the world for five months. It was amazing, fun, scary, nerve wrenching but I have never regretted doing it.
But the point of this website is that if YOU are planning your own adventure around the world this website details so much of what I learned along the way and hopefully you'll find it helpful, interesting and at times even inspirational.
