"Never take a cross country trip with a kid who has just learned to whistle" Jean Deuel
There are so many websites offering 'know how' for the single or partnered Gap Year traveller but very little lurks for the Gap Year traveller seeking info and help on travelling with children.
One of our biggest problems as we travelled, and it was one we all felt pretty badly at various points along the way for differing reasons, was loneliness. It's funny how you can be surrounded by 100 other people yet still feel lonely.
So one thing I heartily recommend is networking with other people on other sites and through forums who plan on doing the same thing. Then once you have got to know them a bit arrange to meet up along the way.
This way, when your child is bored with 'Hey, look at that erupting volcano!' or 'Wow, look at that 20m crocodile!' (and yes, they can be like that) you know that in 8 days time you will be meeting up with...
Because what catches our imaginations sometimes leaves them cold. What they LOVE is meeting and playing with other children. My girls adored meeting other kids and loathed saying goodbye knowing they would never see them again. It was one of the hardest things to do on the trip.
