Ziploc Bags and travel
These are a truly blessed invention and what I would call essential packing. Use them to separate the items in your first aid bag. Tablets in one, ointments another, plasters a third etc. Keep all your liquid items in Ziploc bags i.e. shampoo, sun cream. The bag will keep all the depressurised, exploded gunk away from your clothes, books etc when you send it in the hold of an airplane.
Ziploc bags are also great for the tight budget and they can be used as doggy bags to carry uneaten meals from restaurants.
Finally keep all your travel documents in Ziploc bags, even if you carry these on you. You would be surprised how wet your passport can get in a Malawian monsoon! Even when it is tucked into your bum bag. For peace of mind we also kept our Ipod, mobile phones, cameras and Gameboys etc tucked into Ziploc bags.
They are also great for holding snacks and wet flannels in your hand luggage… separately of course!
