Bum Bags - Gap Year Travel
I learnt not to carry passports, tickets, travellers cheques in a day pack, particularly not in a section that has easy access, these are really easy to pick pocket.
I used a good bum bag (slightly bigger than the one in the image) with three compartments. A smallish separate compartment for the things I didn't often need to get out like our passports, emergency cash, spare credit cards and my drivers license etc. (And don’t forget to keep these in a waterproof Ziploc bag. A veritable monsoon in Malawi soaked my passport which was in my bum bag. All the ink in the stamps ran - including the immigration stamp back into South Africa. It did make things tricky.)
I kept my camera and mobile phone in a large middle compartment that I could easily access (I had a large bulky camera which wasn't wholly ideal in terms of size and it was a tight fit in the bag) and in a final pocket I kept my spending cash.
Finally, my main credit card and a few notes I kept tucked neatly into my bra!
