Gap Year Travel for Adults with Kids.

Cook Islands, early dawn when everyone apart from myself and a few fisherman were fast asleep.

Navigation and the Gap Year Family

"All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveller is unaware."
Martin Buber

I can vouch for that!!!

Navigating in Africa, Australia and New Zealand was a big adventure and we spent many, many hours across the whole trip, totally not where we expected to be.

Each morning we would plan our journey in a vague way, as we never knew what we would come across along the way that would tempt us to divert.

Once we had a rough idea where we were headed the children would take turns in being the Navigator for the day. This did marvellous things for their map reading, kept them interested in where we were going and taught them that getting lost wasn't necessarily a disaster and could even be an adventure.

What I learnt was that patience was a virtue and that, usually, I would have got lost even if they hadn’t been navigating.

I did decide that if I ever did this again I would certainly get a hire car with SAT NAV!
