Gap year food and children
Watching a seagull trying to catch his lunch. Problem was his lunch, a sand shark, was bigger than he was.

People fuel and long trips

“Your true traveler finds boredom rather agreeable than painful. It is the symbol of his liberty-his excessive freedom. He accepts his boredom, when it comes, not merely philosophically, but almost with pleasure.” - Aldous Huxley

I didn't take the children out of their safe little world and all the way around the world and not expect them to try and experience all the different aspects of life in foreign countries and this includes food.

If you read the children's journals you will see that most of their days revolve around the next meal stop!

Some of the food was really tasty and some of it was really uhg. They had a much bigger selection of food compared to england. The people in Singapore love a lot of weird food.

Extract from Sarah's Singapore Journal!

When we were on the road travelling long distances some of the time was spent idly wondering about what the next meal was going to be and what weird thing we'd be eating.

Eliza is particularly fussy about her food and her favourite food is plain pasta or cheese and tomato. Cheese and tomato anything. She loathes fish with a deep and abiding passion.

Needless to say, after the homogenous same same same of the UK food outlets it was a big shock to her system to hit the food courts of Asia. Here she was inflicted with fish head noodles, cooked right in front of her by a proud and smiling chinese chef. Her absolute horror warring with innate good manners made her accept the bowl of food and attempt to eat it. She even managed to hold down a wretch until the chef had turned to serve the next customer.

The next fright was having almost finished a bowl a delicious chicken noodle soup only to find a curled up chicken claw resting comfortable at the bottom of the bowl. (She is now a vegetarian)

People Food on the Road

With regards eating on the road and not in the campervan I seldom packed a picnic lunch from where we were staying but instead waited until mealtimes and stopped where we were to visit local shops and deli’s. This way lunch was as much about exploring the local shops and local delicacies (crocodile and kangaroo pie, zebra biltong and chicken feet soups) and having a stretch as about simply eating.
(Of course I tried to avoid garage purchases as much as I could as these cost easily 25% to 50% more than a local supermarkets.)

... in fact I was so relaxed that I fell asleep for most of the day and woke up at 8 in the night my tummy was groaning at me like mad. So we went and got the food which scrumdidilyumpscous I felt like I was going to pop there were burps all around.
