Gap Year Travel for Adults with Kids.

A mournful seal with her soft eyes posing nicely for me on the beach at Kaikoura, New Zealand.

Spontaneous swims in the vey chilly Atlantic. All well and good until followed by the walk home with chafing jeans and sore feet!

"Because how we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives" - Anne Dillard

Air Travel

Always encourage the kids to use the airport loos rather than those on the planes. Airport toilets are usually far more hygienic and roomy than those on the plane.

When they do have to use the in flight lavatories insist they put on their shoes before they go. The visitor before usually seems to miss the bowl. Eurgh!

Different loos

During our travels we have come across long drops, squats, flush loos, dunny's, sawdust loos, thunder boxes and chemical loos. Furthermore some toilets have been unisex. We have seen sparkling loos, filthy loos, and loos where you have to check for posionous snakes, frogs or spiders (or all three) first.

You will frequently find yourself learning how to use a new loo then having to explain to the children how it works and what to do.

Some loos will have you feeling faint and wanting to disinfect EVERYTHING insight, not least of all the children.

Loo Paper

Many public loos, certainly in Asia and Africa, will not supply loo paper so remember to have some close at hand to dole out.

Loos in predominately muslim countries will have water / hoses to clean yourself with which may mean you're clean but it doesn't necessarily mean dry and if you are only nine it can mean you are soaked.
