Knowing when enough is enough

"I like a road that doesn’t know just where it wants to go, a road that’s always wandering and turning to and fro…following a winding stream, or curving round a shore. Making loops upon a hill to reach the valley floor. I feel akin to vagrant roads for I like best to roam not knowing until evening comes what place I call my home." - Rachel Hartnett.

In some ways this backs up my feelings on Booking Ahead and needing to be in certain place at a certain time. There were days when we had, for example, a six hour drive ahead of us and we would call it quits just an hour away from our destination.

Time when enough was enough, where we all getting grumpy with each other and every mile felt like ten and the road just seemed to go on and on and on. I was sleepy at the wheel and the kids tearful and crotchety.

Time to call it a day. Again this proved the value of not booking anything ahead of ourselves.
I found it absolutely essential to allow flexibility in our itinerary for just this sort of occasion.

(Strange that on some days a two hour journey can feel like twelve and other days when a sic hour journey can pass by in a flash)

It is worthwhile, when you plan your trip, that if you want to do everything with confirmed accommodation in place that you remember there will be days when the road seems to go on and on and on forever.

If you do plan to do a lot of advance booking it might be better in this case, to plan shorter distances between destinations.
